Guided Riverfront Walk
THIS EVENT IS PUT ON BY THE MISSISSIPPI PARK CONNECTION
If you plan on attending, please register at their website: https://fareharbor.com/embeds/book/parkconnection/items/
Dakota people call the Mississippi River "Haha Wakpa" (river of the falls). The story of Minneapolis begins at Owamniyomni (turbulent waters, whirlpool, or eddy) or St. Anthony Falls, the only true waterfall on the 2,350-mile length of the Mississippi River. This ranger-led tour connects archaeological sites, nationally significant historic buildings and landmarks, while moving through an abundant natural environment.
Tours begin at the bandstand in Father Hennepin Bluff Park. You'll explore the historic riverfront of the area with a National Park Service ranger who will share stories about the area's past, present, and future.
The tour is suitable for all ages. We will walk up to 1.25 miles (approx. 2 km) on level, paved trails. Some sections offer little-to-no-protection from the weather elements. Wear weather-appropriate clothing and footwear.

Notice of a Public Hearing: East River Flats Park
The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board is excited to share the East River Flats Concept Plan
A new Concept Plan for East River Flats Park proposes to transform a portion of the park into a sand volleyball hub, ideally situated near the University of Minnesota campus, with excellent parking, trail connections and improved river views. Construction is expected to begin summer 2026 and be completed by the end of the year.
East River Flats is located on the East Bank of the Mississippi River and is part of the larger Mississippi River Gorge Regional Park. It's adjacent to the University of Minnesota East Bank campus and is the site of the boathouse for the U of M women’s rowing team.
The proposed improvements include:
Eight sand volleyball courts
Two picnic shelters with grills
A non-motorized river access point for canoes and kayaks
An outdoor riverfront classroom
Drinking fountains, benches, bike parking and picnic tables
Stormwater infrastructure
Riverfront invasive species removal and native vegetation restoration
The Concept Plan is founded on the 2019 Mississippi Gorge Regional Park Plan and was presented to the East Bank Neighborhoods Partnership in mid-March, where it received a warm welcome and strong support.
Community and stakeholder engagement included outreach to paddling groups, fly fishing advocates, University representatives and MPRB staff.
A Public Hearing will be held April 15 at 6:30 pm in the Board Room of the Mary Merrill Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board Headquarters, 2117 West River Road, prior to the Board meeting.
The purpose of the Public Hearing is to hear public comments on the East River Flats Park Improvements Project, as approved in the 2019 Mississippi Gorge Regional Park Plan.
Speak in person: Go to Mary Merrill MPRB Headquarters on the day of the hearing and add your name to the sign-up sheet at the front desk. Individuals who would like to provide comments to the Board of Commissioners about the amendment may sign up to speak at the meeting before 6:30 pm.
You may also call 612-230-6400 before 3 pm on the day of the hearing to sign up to speak.
Email written comments: Email your comments to opentime@minneapolisparks.org by 3 pm on the day of the hearing. Comments will be included in the public record of the meeting.

Father Hennepin Bluff Park Stewardship
Help restore native habitats and protect the clean waters of this scenic nature sanctuary by the Mississippi River, once part of the St. Anthony Falls.
As a volunteer, you will assist in creating spaces for native plants to thrive, removing invasive species, and cleaning up the shoreline and park slopes near limestone rocks, where waters once cascaded like they do at Minnehaha Falls. You’ll have the opportunity to rotate between various stewardship activities throughout the season.

All are Welcome! We leave stalks standing through the winter to provide shelter and sustenance to wildlife. Most of our native bees and butterflies winter underground or in stems. Birds eat the seeds. We wait to trim most stalks till the temperature is 50 degrees. Most planting is done at the end of May or early June. Though we plant mostly perennials, some plants will need replacing. Rain Dates will be announced on the garden e-mail.

Save Our Signs
Join the Save Our Signs (SOS) team—a constellation of librarians, public historians and data experts based out of the University of Minnesota Libraries—for a presentation and discussion event where we will explore how to connect institutional resources to people power in order to protect endangered cultural resources.
Save Our Signs is a crowdsourced research project launched in response to the Trump administration issuing “Restoring Truth and Sanity to American History,” an executive order that targets educational resources found in National Parks Service (NPS) sites across the country and directs NPS staff and visitors to report signs and exhibits that "inappropriately disparage Americans past or living.”
The NPS serves as the country’s largest outdoor history classroom. Each congressionally mandated site provides a robust and multi-faceted history of the United States. SOS invite members of the public to visit NPS sites, engage with history, and take photos of interpretive signs to be preserved in a public archive. As of today, this archive is home to over 10,000 photos of NPS signs from across the country, documenting stories ranging from the Stonewall Uprising in New York City to the incarceration of Japanese Americans at Manzanar in California.
In this presentation, we'll tell the story of how the team behind Save Our Signs decided to meet the moment. We will share what we’ve learned about how the resources of a research university can be leveraged to mobilize people to create new knowledge. We’ll use this space to explore how university researchers can pursue collaborative, co-creative research that has the power to protect endangered cultural resources and advance social justice. By bringing people into the research process, we are co-creating new knowledge and offering opportunities for agency and action during times of social crisis.
This is a hybrid event (in-person and online) and will not be recorded. Snacks and drinks will be provided for in-person attendees. As always, this event is free and open to the public. Please email liberalartshub@umn.edu with any inquiries!
