Marshall Field Pollinator Patch
The Marshall Field Pollinator Patch at Van Cleve Park was first proposed by former Park Director Jordan Nelson as an ideal location for a new native garden. The idea took shape when Como volunteers sought to expand pollinator habitat while working on a grant proposal for a Pollinator Party.
In early 2020, approval was secured through discussions with multiple stakeholders, including Minneapolis Public Schools, which owns the land. After modifying the design to meet their requirements, a “No-Money” contract was established for our management of the garden.
Funding and logistics were handled through private contributions, with Karl and Lila covering sod removal costs and Lauren coordinating planting efforts while ensuring COVID-19 safety measures. The garden was designed with native perennials to support pollinators, particularly the Rusty Patched Bumble Bee, and planned to bloom from April to October.
Maintenance responsibilities include watering as needed, monthly weeding and trash removal, and spring perennial trimming.
