Renter Resources

The East Bank neighborhoods are home to a vibrant and diverse community of renters, representing nearly 90% of the population. Whether you’ve lived here for years or are just settling in, the East Bank Neighborhoods Partnership (EBNP) is dedicated to supporting you. Below are valuable resources to help you stay informed, protect your rights, and maintain stable housing.

Know Your Rights

Renters are protected by a range of federal, state, and local laws. Understanding these laws empowers you to safeguard your right to quality housing and hold landlords accountable. The following resources provide essential information about your rights as a tenant:

  • Minnesota Attorney General’s Guide to Tenant-Landlord Law

  • LawHelpMN’s Self-Help Guide to Housing

If you have additional questions, here are helpful contact numbers:

  • HOME Line’s Free Tenant Hotline: 612-728-5767

    • For Spanish: 612-255-8870

    • For Somali: 612-255-8860

Facing an Eviction Notice? Here's What You Can Do:

  1. Seek Legal Help Immediately: While you’re not required to have an attorney in housing court, legal representation significantly increases your chances of staying housed. Contact:

    • Hennepin County Adult Representation Services: 612-348-7012

    • Mid-Minnesota Legal Aid: 612-334-5970

  2. Attend Your Hearing: Always show up on time for your court date. Missing it could result in an automatic loss of your case.

  3. If You Owe Rent: If you’ve applied for emergency rental assistance (e.g., RentHelpMN), you may be protected from eviction for nonpayment. Bring proof of your application to court.

  4. Withheld Rent for Repairs?: Bring the full amount of rent owed to court. You must justify this action; otherwise, the court may order you to pay the full balance.

  5. Settle Before the Hearing: Negotiating with your landlord before court can help you avoid eviction. Ensure any settlement agreement includes a request to expunge the eviction from your record.
